I found a review on the Personal Concepts of Survival album from the side project Pyro is featured on called Dark World Sunshine. Review is by Roger from KVRX Radio. Dark World Sunshine is the trio of Austin locals Jacob Payne (songwriter), Alex Dupree (vocals/guitar), and J Muzacz (percussion). Originally the brainchild of Jacob and Alex, this project is an introspective journey into the life of Payne, a paraplegic, and both a beautiful and haunting exploration of life, death, and love through the sounds of acoustic folk. Several talented guests are featured on certain tracks (see CD case), and the band's sound reminds me a bit of the Violent Femmes or Devendra Banhart at times. There's some fine songwriting and minimalist, yet excellent musicianship on this record, as on the autobiographical "Paraplegia Blues" (3) or track 5, "Pity’s Prospect." I also enjoyed the simple, low-fi sound, percussion, and vocal harmony on "Dead Now" (7). It's a live cut, and you get to hear the band stop the tape and do a second take—a nice touch that adds to the album's overall charm. Perhaps the best song on this record is track 13, "Away to the Moon." The addition of Konrad Wert's violin and call-and-response vocals harmonies from Pyro Doomsday contribute to a haunting, somber mood on this beautiful song. Recommended Tracks: 13, 3, 5, 7. -From KVRX.org |
